Dealing with a bank

What should you look for in a bank?  And what does a bank look for in you?  These pages will help you form a positive working relationship with your bank.

Find a bank that has services to meet all your needs.  On the one hand, you might find it easier to have your mortgage, investments, and credit cards all from one institution.  On the other hand, you might find that you get better rates if you shop around and choose a different institution for each financial need.  Regardless, you will want to see if your bank can give you all of the services you need, or if they excel at one particular service that will be of use to you.

You want a bank that is reputable and reliable.  You’ll want to deal with people who are friendly and helpful.  Choose a financing expert or loans officer who is willing to listen to your needs.

When you are interacting with your bank, be open with your bank: your relationship should be built on honesty.  Have a positive attitude:  a banker will be more likely to give you a better deal if you are open to suggestions and problem-solving.  Prepare a budget when before you meet with your bank.  This helps you know how much money to ask for, and will allow you to field any questions that the bank asks.

Borrow earlier rather than later to establish a good credit rating.  Ask your banker to clarify anything that confuses you.  You will both be happier if you both understand all aspects of your agreement.  Also, remember to consider the future while discussing your options with your banker.  While it is important to meet your present needs, you also need to take the future into account with your financial planning.
